Did you notice those blue and purple flowers popping up in the grassy fields? 😀 They are sending the message that spring has officially arrived in Finland! What’s even better is that THE END OF SEMESTER IS COMING! I can imagine many of you are cramming for exams and end-of-term papers. Hang in there, you can do it! Meanwhile, wanna take a break and join us for a day of fun?
Frontier and ALKU (the student organization of Area and Cultural Studies) are arranging a May Day picnic together on the 30th of April at Kaisaniemi Park. There will be free snacks, and at some point of the day, we will head over to see The Crowning of Havis Amanda at the Market Square. Click here for more information.
There is another good news we wish to share with you. We have been discussing with ALKU and Macondo (the student organization of Latin American Studies) since the early March about the possibility of merging. By now, it has become certain that the three student organizations will combine into a larger body while still maintaining their autonomy on a certain level. The execution means that in the future we can bring much more students together, and Frontier may arrange events independently or jointly with other two groups to create a lot of multicultural activities. Stay tuned!
It was nice to see so many of you at the Thanksgiving dinner. The year is coming to an end, and that means that the time has come for our last event of the year, the Fall Meeting and Christmas party! Yay! It will be on the 4th of December at the New Student House, in meeting room Illuusio (Mannerheimintie 5 A, 5th floor). The meeting starts at 6 pm, and when we are done (probably by 7 pm) the party starts!
In the meeting we will elect the chair and other board members for the 2016 term. If you cannot come to the meeting, but still wish to run for a position in the board you can send your application to frontier-hallitus (ät) helsinki.fi (by the 2nd of December, 2015). Please mention in your application if you are running for a certain position. Check out our blog to see what positions we have in the current board: https://frontierry.wordpress.com/board-2015/
Here’s the agenda for the meeting:
1. Opening the meeting.
2. Choosing the chair, secretary, two (2) examiners of the minutes and two (2) vote counters.
3. Declaring the quorum and legality of the meeting.
4. Approving the agenda for the meeting.
5. Confirming the action plan, estimates of revenue and expenditure and the membership fee.
6. Choosing the chair and other board members.
7. Choosing two (2) operations inspectors and two (2) deputy operations inspectors.
8. Any other business.
9. Closing the meeting.
Both new and old Frontier members and friends are welcome, just remember to bring your student card or ID with you!
Frontier would like to welcome all of you back after the summer and welcome our new Fulbright Bicentennial Professor Lane Crothers to Finland. We are organizing a hangout in Thirsty Scholar (Fabianinkatu 37) on Tuesday 29 September at 5 pm. The Fulbright students have also been invited.
Welcome to SUB & Frontier’s 4th of July picnic at 2PM on Saturday, July 4th! Come celebrate Independence Day with us 🙂
Please remember to bring your own food & drinks, and maybe a blanket to sit on. Also, if you can think of some nice outdoor activities, we bet everyone would love to take part in them as well. Anything from soccer to mölkky will surely do!
This year the picnic will be held in Katajanokka (the exact spot will be specified later). Due to the awesome location there will also be the possibility to go swimming, yay!
We have reserved Utopia (New Student Building, 5th floor) as a back-up plan just in case, but let’s all hope that the weather turns out to be lovely and we can have our picnic outdoors.

Frontier is organizing a visit to the American Resource Center Wednesday the 8th of April at 3 pm. There will be a guest speaker from the U.S. Embassy telling us about what it is like to work as a diplomat and what the Embassy does here in Helsinki. The event is informal and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. After the discussion, the American Resource Center will present their services and materials.
